...But What Will He Do For Me....?

It's very much a shame to see great nations of people fall prey to a demonstrably failed philosophy,
but it's happening in most, maybe all of the industrialized nations of the earth. Of course, the non-industrial nations are already there. I'm guessing that it'll take longer than my lifetime before the world returns to a new black plague-and-famine Dark Age, but we appear to be headed that way. With the blessing and abetting of not only the world's leaders, but the herds of the great unwashed, as well.

The other day, I raged about the Democrat candidates' promising undefined change. The professed Democrat voters seem to be largely satisfied with that. Keep in mind that, to a convicted witch, tied to the stake and standing 'pon kindling, the lighting of the fire represents change.

I've also noticed another disturbing trend. I don't think it's new; I suspect it originates with the FD Roosevelt Presidency, but now it exists without shame and is explicitly declared by mostly Democrat voters as if it's normal and proper.

"What will (s)he do for me?"

I've been hearing that from the quivering mouths of Democrat voters at just about every man-on-the-street interview and post-debate program during this ever-so-interminable Presidential campaign season. I won't say it doesn't happen at Republican gatherings, but I haven't heard it said....yet.

"What will (s)he do for me?"

It's worse than shameful that this sentiment should erupt from the lips of an American! I've never been more ashamed. Well, truthfully, I'll assume no guilt for this degradation of the vision of the rugged individualist American, because I don't, even slightly, share the sentiment.

Presidents don't do things for people. Let's first get that straight. Presidents enrich their cronies at taxpayer expense. Presidents build monuments to themselves at taxpayer expense. Presidents travel the world at taxpayer expense. Presidents live like wealthy industrialists, without actually ever having to produce anything, at taxpayer expense. Presidents increase the breadth and depth of their power, at taxpayer expense. Presidents cause innocent people to die at taxpayer expense.

In order to understand what a President is supposed to do, if indeed any such thing as a President is actually needed (not by me!), one should first look at Article II, Sections 2 & 3 of the Constitution of the United States, as well as the Bill of Rights. One could also read the letters and papers of the Founders to gain the flavor of what they meant when they built these documents.

Nowhere in any of these documents is it suggested that any part of the President's job is to "do things for me." The President is not a god. The President is not a king. The President is not your daddy.

The President's only job is to play a large part in the role of government: he's an administrator whose job it is to direct the forces and agencies whose only job is to protect the rights of Americans. If he can't do that job, then what the hell good is he?

They've killed Freedom! Those bastards!

Too true. To combat the lack of knowledge about the Constitution etc., I participated in several Liberty Day celebrations years ago. We would go to a public place like a post office, wear a matching T-shirt and bag (with the US flag--what else?) and pass out booklets containing the founding documents (Const., Bill of Rights, and one or two others). Before this, we would go up to a random person and ask them if they wanted to answer a question about the Constitution (flashcards). Most of the people got the questions partly right; a few got them wholly right; and some...well...didn't.

(apologizes for long anecdote)

Hannah,

I've read your blog--not long enough or focussed enough--and find it interesting and informative. Comment here as often and as lengthy as you find satisfactory.

I'm not familiar with Liberty Day, but then, perhaps I don't get out enough.....

Sounds like fun.

CATO Institute has a small booklet containing the Declaration, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and all of the Amendments. They sell them for a buck apiece. Neat thing to hand out. I carry one with me everywhere.

You touch on a subject which is hard to put in one basket, for lack of a better term. The de-Americanization of America started when hard working men and women accepted government handouts rather than accept hard times. It has grown into the monster which will eventually strangle the strongest willed through government assisted pharmacy, which many believe is only their just reward for having paid taxes which go to so many of the undeserving; "why shouldn't I get some of my own back?"

I explained this to my folks who live in Florida, that the hard working folks who live there in their golden years expect to be paid back for all those years of putting in; but they are now demanding a government assisted program rather than depending on the free market system. When that happens, the "greatest generation" gives up and becomes welfare recipients, then the end of the free market system is close by and we all become servants of our government rather than masters of our government.

They've killed freedom, those bastards.

TF,

Most folks who grew up in the Depression, WWII and Korea years were propagandized to think Social Security would provide for them in their senior years. I'm one of the Korean War kids, and I was told I had a numbered account with SS that would become mine at age 65. Seems funny now. Fortunately many of us my age and younger have learned to make sure we have something extra.

I hope that trend continues, but with the government children's prisons dumbing down and indoctrinating the kids, one wonders how long America, the land of the free, will survive.

Well said, Col.!
And while you've never been more ashamed of your country, Obama's wife has never been more proud. That's the difference between the Left and the rest of us. Up is down.

Aurora,

Thank you! It's hard to believe those idjits swoon over the promise of undefined and unspecified change. The government children's prisons have done their job!

"Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country."

A quote from the not too distant democratic past. One that I believe propelled JFK to his presidency. It just goes to show that the lip service of a contender means little.

Oh yeah, Kennedy was also attributed with another lesser known quote. "F**k the farmers after November."

Steve,

I really didn't care much for Kennedy, but I was in the Navy at the time, and couldn't say much. His handling of the Bay of Pigs rebellion was atrocious. Leads me to think it might've been Cubans in exile that killed him--though I don't know it to be true.
