On Being Neighborly

On the Bill O'Reilly show, in his interview with B Hussein Obama, O'Reilly asked (not a direct quote), how is your "tax the rich" proposal not a means of redistributing wealth? The Democrat candidate replied: “If I am sitting pretty, and you’ve got a waitress who is making minimum wage plus tips, and I can afford it and she can’t — what’s the big deal for me to say, ‘I’m going to pay a little bit more.’ That is neighborliness.”

Before I go any farther, allow me to note another observation about the mannerisms of "He whose middle name shall not be mentioned." We hear a lot about Obama's wondrous speaking ability, which he demonstrates every time he has a script. Whenever Obama doesn't have a script, his speech is halting, full of ums and uhs, misspoken phrases and hasty corrections, etc. Why does he do that, one might ask. Bill Clinton did the same thing. Here's why they do that: They know they can't say what they really think, so they're desperately trying to figure out what they think their audience wants to hear.

That's also why their statements vary greatly from one audience to another, and why they have to continually revise what they say, and try to explain what they really meant when they insult a certain segment of the voting public.

Now, to my main thesis. In the first place, the above quote is not an answer to O'Reilly's question. If Obama has one consistency, it's his failure to answer a question as asked. I've never heard him give a direct answer.

One thing he does, however -s say words to the effect of, "As I've been saying for the past two years...." then proceeds to revise something he's said in the past, to fit the current situation.

Let's take a quick look at the "answer" he actually gave.

If one is well off, one might very well go to restaurants often. 'Tis the nature of the economy that most waitresses don't earn a lot of money.

Some actually do, if they're good waitresses, in tips, but that's not noticed by our not-very-experienced candidate--I suspect he's a cheap tipper.

Since he has no experience with giving waitresses tips according to their ability to help give him a happy dining experience, he doesn't put two and two together. He seems to think that, rather than giving the waitress a well-deserved tip, he wants to force all of us to give her the tip by taxing us and giving her a government check. I guess. The answer, as I've implied, isn't very clear.

Suffice it to say, that the quote strongly suggests that Obama wants somebody else to give the tip.

Cheap is as cheap does.

TF,

I saw that segment of the interview, and the first thing I thought to myself is that if he wants to give the waitress something extra, then he should give it to her. HIM. Not me. I'll give it to someone I think deserves it in MY neck of the woods. Someone in my town that is having hard times. Charity begins at home.

See, that's the way charity has to be. It has to be voluntary. Otherwise it's not charity. It's redistribution of wealth. Or even legalized stealing.

My email to O'Reilly right after the show:

Bill,

When Obama said it was just 'neighborly' for you, basically, to give your money to a waitress in need, you may have pointed out that it isn't 'neighborly' when the full force of the US government is used to take your money and give it to someone else - when that happens, it's called 'socialism' not 'neighborly'. It is only 'neighborly' when you do it on your own accord, voluntarily. There's no such thing as 'forced' volunteerism. It's an oxymoron.

Kent

Don't forget the flickering of the eye and the nervous swallowing, the lowering of the volume...all classic symptoms of a liar!

They know they can't say what they really think, so they're desperately trying to figure out what they think their audience wants to hear.

Ha, you hit the nail on the head.

I wonder if he would like to add his salary to that of his local waitress, halve the total and split it between him and her...or better still, add in a few street bums to even the odds out.
Wealth distribution is just for us peasants...never for the political aristocracy mind. Must get rid of the nasty middle class at all costs. Mustn't have the upstart peasants forgetting their place as they have been over the past couple of centuries.
Obama is, as we say in Australia, full of it!
Great post, Col!

LC,

Well said....My point, exactly.

Kent,

I haven't been able to watch O'Reilly, except for a few minutes at a time, for a while. I wonder (doubt) if he read your note on his show.

It would've been an apt response to his lame answer.

Aurora,

My bad habit is to have my computer in front of me in my den, and my tv behind me. I listen to tv while I blog, etc. I usually only turn and look at the tv if something seems to need a look. That is, unless I'm actually watching a movie or something.

That, and I actually find Obama kind of hard to look at--much like I find Algore hard to look at, and John Kerry. They seem so utterly inadequate, alongside of regular people. Must be a psychological problem.

And thanks for the kind words.

Have a look at this, it's a lot worse that just ums and uhs.

"They know they can't say what they really think..."

Exactly.

"Suffice it to say, that the quote strongly suggests that Obama wants somebody else to give the tip."

That sums up leftist ideology nicely, it's always someone else who must give what they earned through work to others who did not.

MK,

There's a lot of hypocrisy on the left. They fairly reek of it.

You'll note that whenever a wealthy conservative hosts a charity event, he donates heavily of is own fortune. Rush Limbaugh comes to mind--when he hosts a charity event, he matches the sum of all other contributors.

When a leftist hosts such an event, he asks his guests to donate, but you never hear that the host actually donated anything.

His right, of course, but hypocrisy nonetheless.
