What Once Was and What Might Be Redone, Better

Two hundred thirty-two years (and two days) ago today, arguably the greatest political document in history was ratified in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I was contemplating a well-crafted, scathing reminder of our lost freedom (anybody who still thinks America is a free country, I have a parcel of beach front property in Chad I'll sell you) when I stumbled across this article the freedom-oriented newspage, Freedom's Phoenix. Since L Neil Smith, freedom writer emeritus, says what I want to say far better than I can, here's the link.

Nonetheless, I celebrate Independence Day with more attention and reflection than any other of America's scheduled holidays. I miss fireworks. I don't attend those public fireworks shows--a poor substitute for neighbors touching off various types of rockets, fire showers and pinwheels in the street, together--although sometimes I see them from afar. As with most things, Disney does it better.

Each year, I reread the Declaration of Independence and marvel at the man, Thomas Jefferson and many of his contemporaries.

How great is this land, America, and how much greater it might have been!

Warm regards,

Col. Hogan

Happy Birthday America, may you have many, many more and thank you for what you are, a beacon for what is good, for freedom, for liberty, for hope in this dark and dangerous world and for being the protective brother who we don't appreciate and acknowledge enough.

Thank you most of all to your sons and daughters who put their lives on the line, in distant parts of the world for those they don't even know, for something bigger than themselves.

MK,

Thanks for the sentiment, which I, of course, share. I drove by the Los Angeles National Cemetary yesterday, with its rows of white stones, and wished that all those people had been able to live full lives.

Politicians sure can muck things up.

Can you hear the Sousa now? Just turned it up.

Smith's a funny guy.

We had some good fireworks this time. Lots of neighbors (ignoring the fire hazard) shooting off Disney style stuff. Assorted gunshots, and bricks of firecrackers. Plus the usual far off shows.

Right about now I'm missing Jeanine dancing to the Monkees.

....And no Sheriffs thumpin' heads?

Yeah, it's been a long time. I miss discussions with Jeanine, as well as many of the other denizens of Casa de las Rocas.

My backyard neighbor was shooting off some pretty impressive stuff, and I never heard any LAPD sirens. Maybe all that confiscation and arrest stuff was a mite exaggerated.
